Many writers choose self-publishing over traditional, and a growing number of hybrid authors do both.

Capitol Crimes authors Cindy Sample, Anne R. Tan, Jessica Cline and Karen Phillips will discuss their experiences in self-publishing and offer their tips and tricks of the trade, including:

  • setting up the writing and business foundation
  • marketing strategies and tactics
  • thriving as an indie author
  • whether to go wide or Amazon only

These days, even traditionally published authors do most of their own marketing and can learn a lot from our panel about selling your book.

Cindy Sample

Cindy Sample is a former corporate CEO who decided plotting murder was more entertaining than plodding through paperwork. Her eight-book Laurel McKay Humorous Mystery series is primarily set in the California Gold Country, unless Cindy feels like traveling. Then the characters tag along with her on trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean and Las Vegas. Cindy loves researching her books, especially when it involves sampling daiquiris or donuts. Cindy is a five-time finalist for the LEFTY Award for Best Humorous Mystery and a two-time finalist for the SILVER FALCHION Award for best traditional mystery. BIRTHDAYS ARE MURDER is the first book in her new Spindrift Cove Mystery series set in Washington state.

Anne R. Tan

Anne R. Tan writes the Raina Sun Mystery series, the Lucy Fong Mystery series, and the Cedar Woods Mystery series. Her humorous cozy mysteries feature diverse characters and relationships because everyone deserves to be an armchair detective. Please visit Anne's website for more information about her books.

Jessica Cline

Jessica Arden is the author of Once Ghosted, Twice Shy, the first in the Ghosted paranormal cozy mystery series. She’s stomped grapes in her native California, hiked 350 miles on an ancient pilgrimage route in Spain, had breakfast with a coatimundi in Costa Rica, and spent the night in a monastery. But wherever life takes her, her true north will always be with her husband and two energetic boys.

When she’s not writing, you can find Jessica teaching, crafting, or hyperfocusing on her latest research obsession. Jessica's short fiction has appeared in Woman's World as well as multiple anthologies.

Karen A. Phillips

Karen A. Phillips lives in northern California and writes humorous, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are engaging and fearless . . . and yes, she does take boxing lessons.
